Knitting Pattern: Tricolor Seed Stitch All Purpose Cloths

I like making washcloths because they make great gifts, they can serve many purposes throughout the house, they are quick to knit, and you can experiment with all sorts of colors and patterns. This particular pattern of mine is great because the washcloth is reversible, so it looks the same on both sides. This is the first pattern I have ever written down for others to follow, so please let me know if you have any questions. Hope you like it!

Materials:
US Size 7 Needles
100 % cotton yarn (I used Lily Sugar n' Cream), 3 different solid colors (A, B, C), 1 ball each color
Tapestry needle

Gauge:
Not especially important, if you want a square washcloth, you should add enough rows to make the length almost equal to the width. My gauge is about 3.5 stitches per inch (in pattern) to make a 11" by 9" washcloth.

Instructions:
(Washcloth #1)
CO 39 stitches with color A
Row 1: With A, K1, P1 to last stitch, K1 (do not break yarn, but carry it up side of work)
Row 2: Add color B. With B, K1, P1 to last stitch, K1
Row 3: Add color C. With C, K1, P1 to last stitch, K1
Row 4: With A, K1, P1 to last stitch, K1
Row 5: With B, K1, P1 to last stitch, K1
Row 6: With C, K1, P1 to last stitch, K1

Repeat rows 4-6 until washcloth measures about 9 inches. End on row 4. Bind off in pattern with color A. Weave in ends.

(Washcloth #2)
CO 39 stitches with color B
Row 1: With B, K1, P1 to last stitch, K1
Row 2: Add color C. With B, K1, P1 to last stitch, K1
Row 3: Add color A. With C, K1, P1 to last stitch, K1
Row 4: With B, K1, P1 to last stitch, K1
Row 5: With C, K1, P1 to last stitch, K1
Row 6: With A, K1, P1 to last stitch, K1

Repeat rows 4-6 until washcloth measures about 9 inches. End on row 4. Bind off in pattern with color B. Weave in ends.

(Washcloth #3)
CO 39 stitches with color C
Row 1: With C, K1, P1 to last stitch, K1
Row 2: Add color A. With B, K1, P1 to last stitch, K1
Row 3: Add color B. With C, K1, P1 to last stitch, K1
Row 4: With C, K1, P1 to last stitch, K1
Row 5: With A, K1, P1 to last stitch, K1
Row 6: With B, K1, P1 to last stitch, K1

Repeat rows 4-6 until washcloth measures about 9 inches. End on row 4. Bind off in pattern with color C. Weave in ends.

Happy Knitting!

Variations on a Theme

When I find a pattern I like, I tend to want to knit it again and again, but not always in the same way. I like to change it up a bit, either by using more colors, or changing the pattern so that there will be a slightly different variation, but in essence the pattern will be the same.

In this case, I changed up a pattern for a cowl hood, (see last entry for the cowl hood I knit in the pattern with no changes) by making it a striped pattern, with the purl stitches being a solid green, and the knit stitches a variegated color that has shades of green and pink. Below are pictures of the result:

Some Recent Finished Projects

I just completed this cowl that can turn into a hood. You can find my Etsy listing here.

Wear it up as a hood...

...or down as a cowl

I was commissioned by a friend of mine to make her some socks. I like using the sock loom that I have to make socks, because it produces a tighter stitch, and I just like the way that they come out. Here are some pictures of the process:

Hand Knit Seed Stitch Hat

I finished my seed stitch hat, and it came out great! It is super soft and stretchy, it will be able to fit most adult heads. Here are some pictures:

This color is rose, the yarn is 85% acyrlic/15%
nylon blend, it is very, very soft.

This is what it looks like when the brim is folded up,
which provides extra warmth around the ears

This is what the hat looks like with the brim
unfolded, which gives the top part of the hat
a slouchy look.

I have begun working on my friend's socks, I have finished one and am starting to loom the next one. Stay tuned for pictures of the finished product!

Works in Progress

I am so excited that I have so many knitting projects lined up. Getting ready for the fall and for the upcoming craft fairs is always a fun time. My latest one that I am working on now is pictured below. I'm making a hat from a new yarn that I haven't tried before, Loops and Threads "Woolike," an acrylic/nylon blend. I really like the feel of this yarn, because even though it is made of acrylic it doesn't have that "plastic" kind of feel to it. I have been trying to avoid acrylic yarns because of that, but I saw this one and thought I would try it, and so far so good. The hat feels super soft and light, and is going to be perfect for the fall. I finished the ribbed pattern for the brim, and now I am working in a seed stitch for the top. I am hoping to finish sometime in the next day or so. The next project after that will be socks for a friend of mine who has asked me to make her some.

This is the yarn I am using for my hat.

I like to make a longer brim so that it can be folded over
for extra comfort and warmth,or if unfolded it can
make the top of the hat look slouchy.

Socks for My Husband

Today I finished a pair of socks that I made for my husband, and he loves them and would not take them off all day. The other pair in the pictures are mine, also handmade.
